The bananas were from the identical source, packed at the same colour stage, stored at 20 degrees Celsius at 50-60 R.H. under 1000 LUX Lighting. The images are time elapsed, sequential photographic images taken during monitoring of a shelf life trial. The timer on the left side shows the sequential photos taken every 20 mins over an 8 day cycle. The timer on the right shows the number of days.

Bananas can be packed in these bags at source, plantation pre-ripening and after ripening. This is just one of a selection of ongoing projects aimed directly at improving Shelf Life Extension, Flavour Retention and Wastage Reduction by the Smart Degradable Americas research team.

Modified Interactive Packaging (MIP)
  • Increases in-store shelf-life and home-life
  • Allows use of less expensive transports, like surface shipping versus air freight
  • Reduces CO2 emissions by using ocean freight versus air freight
  • Reduces packaging materials with less waste going to the landfill
  • Extends seasons and balances seasonal peaks
  • Does not require chemical treatment, reduces preservative treatments required in other packaging methods
  • Prevents dehydration and subsequent weight loss, requiring less overages
  • Minimizes condensation, inhibiting the development of micro-organisms which cause decay
  • Allows fruit to ripen "on the vine" longer before harvesting capturing natural flavor and retaining nutrients
  • Retains nutritional value of produce

FRESH `Nī SMART PACKAGING

STANDARD PACKAGING

NATURALLY ACTIVATED EARTH CONCENTRATE PARTICLES CREATE MINUTE STRESS FRACTURES BIG ENOUGH FOR OXYGEN, GASEOUS WATER VAPOUR AND CARBON DIOXIDE MOVEMENT. THIS UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS PRODUCE TO CREATE ITS OWN DESIRED ATMOSPHERE REDUCING RESPIRATION RATES, ALLOWING THE PRODUCE TO "GO TO SLEEP".

MIP HAS A REDUCED RATE OF SHELF LIFE DETERIORATION COMPARED TO MAP AND STANDARD PACKAGING. THIS IS DUE TO THE BIOFEEDBACK MECHANISM ALLOWING THE PRODUCT TO CREATE ITS OWN DESIRED ATMOSPHERE PLACING IT INTO A RELAXED STATE OF DORMANCY.

PERFORMANCE WITH STANDARD PROTOCOLS
PROTOCOLS ARE EASILY BROKEN WITH MAP AND STANDARD PACKAGING METHODS, RESULTING IN RAPID DETERIORATION OF PRODUCT SHELF LIFE.

WHEN PROTOCOLS ARE BROKEN AND PUT BACK IN PLACE WITH MIP TECHNOLOGY, THE PRODUCT "WAKES UP", RE-SETS ITS OWN ATMOSPHERE AND THEN GOES BACK "TO SLEEP". EACH TIME A PROTOCOL IS BROKEN, THE MIP RE-SETTING CYCLE REPEATS ENSURING MAXIMUM SHELF LIFE PERFORMANCE.

PERFORMANCE WITH BROKEN PROTOCOL - TEMP
MIP: HOW IT WORKS

Produce will adjust respiration rates in response to biofeedback mechanisms. It will naturally adjust this self-regulated environment to meet its individual needs.

Slows down respiration > Slows down metabolism > Produce in suspended animation

Antimicrobial Properties

Of particular importance is the inclusion of a natural food approved antioxidant preservative that provides protection against microbiological spoilage and reduces the risk of pathogen contamination. The preservative assists with the dissipation, absorption and vaporzation of moisture, protecting the contents and internal surroundings from early mycotoxin fungi formation, premature deterioration and microbial instability.
