Composting - Another Way to Recycle

Composting has been around for years and is finally being properly integrated into mainstream commercial re-cycling programs. Some common concerns when a company, organization, school, community or basic household implements a composting program are: "what can go into our compost?" and "how can I get my compostable items to my compost bin without making a mess?".

Most plastic bags and liners are recyclable, but depending on the composition of the plastic - they can take a long time to fully degrade. Some plastics degrade best when placed into a landfill, such as our Degradable items made with the TDPA additive from EPI which break down within 18 - 24 months. Some take years to breakdown at all, such as most standard packaging with no degradable additive. Then there are the compostable plastics, most of which will compost within 90 days when placed in a properly functioning compost heap.

Getting organic waste to a compost heap can be a bit messy. Using Compost-Ready liners and garbage bags allows you to simply toss your entire bag of organic waste directly onto your compost heap.

Many countries, large cities and organizations around the world have realized utilizing landfill space effectively is good planning, but it is not enough to sustain the amount of waste our society is generating. The alternative many are turning to is the practice of composting.

Benefits to Composting

Composting creates a value-added product with true and multiple environmental benefits. It does not produce methane or leachate (the liquid that seeps through landfills) and reduces the dependence on more expensive and space restrictive alternatives. Composting can improve soil "tilth", provide a replenishing nutrient source, assist with moisture retention and help control plant disease.

Composting encourages the production of beneficial micro-organisms (mainly bacteria and fungi), which breakdown organic matter. The result is a rich, moist, marketable commodity that requires; less watering, fewer chemicals, fertilizer and pesticides. It can help clean up contaminated soil, reduce soil erosion and generate higher crop yields.
